Why Peer-Led Mental Health Support Matters: The Story of Trowbridge Service Users Group

The Story of Trowbridge Service Users Group

In the heart of Wiltshire, something truly powerful is happening — and it’s not in a clinic, a hospital, or a therapist’s office. It’s at The Cabin on Seymour Road in Trowbridge, where the Trowbridge Service Users Group (TSUG) is proving just how transformative peer-led mental health support can be.

Founded in 2018, TSUG is a community-driven mental health group, run by and for people with lived experience of mental illness. Our mission is simple but vital: to provide a safe, welcoming, and non-judgmental space where people can connect, express themselves creatively, and find hope through community.

What Are Peer-Run Sessions and Why Are They So Powerful?

Peer-led sessions are groups run by people who have walked the path themselves. Instead of formal programs or clinical oversight, these sessions thrive on mutual support, trust, and shared experience. Research shows that peer support leads to:

  • A reduction in hospital admissions and symptoms (Mind, 2023)
  • Increased self-esteem and empowerment
  • Improved social functioning and reduced isolation
  • Greater engagement in treatment and recovery

In fact, a 2022 report by the Mental Health Foundation found that 79% of individuals in peer support programs felt better able to manage their mental health, compared to 48% in traditional care.

Our Journey: Growth Through Grassroots Support

At TSUG, we believe every individual is more than just a diagnosis — they’re a person with strengths, talents, and potential. That belief is at the core of everything we do.

Last year, we trialed three peer-led groups. Not all of them succeeded — a harsh reminder of how critical funding is for small community organisations. But one project bloomed beautifully: our gardening group.

Thanks to a grant from Selwood Housing, we transformed our garden into a healing space. Members grew food, shared produce with Trowbridge Futures, and found calm, confidence, and purpose in the soil. As a peer-run group, our lead gardener, someone with lived experience, has access to the space to run their own sessions and maintain the garden, bringing both structure and independence to their journey.

Unfortunately, our bid for continued funding this year was unsuccessful. Yet, our members remain committed — because these sessions aren’t just about plants; they’re about growing lives.

Peer Support in Action

Our Tuesday drop-in sessions are always open, and the garden continues to thrive with activity. Members support one another, share skills, and some even lead specialist sessions — from crafts to art therapy.

We don’t evaluate or judge. We support. Because we understand. We’ve been there.

One member described TSUG as “life-changing”, especially the chance to engage in crafts and build new friendships. Another highlighted how the group offers vital support to those dealing with both mental and physical health challenges, with no pressure and no bureaucracy.

Recognition and Awards

TSUG’s impact hasn’t gone unnoticed. We’re proud recipients of the Creative Lives Award, recognising our commitment to creative and inclusive support for mental well-being.

Why We Need Your Support

Peer-led groups like TSUG are proven, effective, and deeply needed — yet they often struggle to secure funding compared to clinical services. As NHS services are stretched and waiting lists grow longer, grassroots mental health initiatives are more important than ever.

We’re calling on local authorities, grant providers, and community-minded individuals to support programs that empower people to support each other. With funding, we can continue — and expand — the work that’s already changing lives.
